Spy on anyone using smartphone vibration motor with VibraPhone attack
VibraPhone attack can turn smartphone vibration motor into microphone to spy on the user
Two researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s department of Electrical and Computer Engineering have recently devised a method to turn a smartphone’s vibration motor into a microphone, capable of recording the sound around them.
The brains behind the “VibraPhone” research are Associate professor Romit Roy Choudhury and Ph.D. candidate Nirupam Roy. They are planning to present their paper at MobiSys in Singapore later this month.
Even though a speaker, a microphone, and a vibration motor have completely different functions, actually, these components depend on very similar basic principles.
The VibraPhone is based on the idea that any vibration motor is technically a speaker. By moving a coil, vibration motors transform electrical current sent into sound waves. The coil in this case produces vibrations and low buzzing sounds in the phone.
Since a microphone is essentially a reversed speaker, taking incoming sounds and transforms them back into electrical waves, the researchers decided to try an experiment during which they turned a phone’s vibration motor into a microphone.
The researchers say they had to rewire the phone’s vibration motor, which makes this highly improbable to be an attack that can be used in the real world unless the attacker has enough time to break the phone apart and rewire its vibration motor.
The researchers said while they were able to record sounds, the sound’s quality was however very poor in the experiment attempted by them.
The reason was that the vibration motor was not improved for recording audio and was able to record sound waves of maximum frequencies of up to 2 kHz, the lower end of the spectrum, leaving out high-pitch noises.
In order to enhance its output, the researchers applied various algorithms to the recorded sound wave and effort to fill in the missing audio waves matching the high-frequency sound.
While four in five persons were able to understand spoken words, the results were not the best. The researchers did not try to refine this algorithm and said that someone that has an interest in enhancing sound pick-up via vibration motors would be able to get superior results with more effort.
“Even automatic speech recognizers were able to decode the majority of the detected words and phrases, especially at higher loudness,” the researchers said. “The application space of such systems remains open, and could range from malware eavesdropping into human phone conversation, to voice controlled wearables, to better microphones that use the vibra-motor as a second MIMO-antenna.”
Below is a video explaining the attack. More details and examples are available via the VibraPhone website, and in the Listening through a Vibration Motor research paper by Nirupam Roy and Romit Roy Choudhury.

Characters available: Shizuka, Beatrix, Kimiko, Nikolas, Yoshiki, Katashi annnnnnnd, everyone’s favourite waifu; Ai and Dai (each having their own separate dakimakura) So all together there is: 8 different pillow characters, each double sided with different designs.
As a bonus, I can guarantee that I will touch, sniff and hug all the pillow cases before sending them out….for quality purposes, nothing shady

Anonymous using pornbots to bombard thousands of ISIS affiliated Twitter accounts with porn
The online hacktivist group, Anonymous has a new weapon against ISIS and its supporters Twitter accounts. Swarm and flood their Twitter accounts with porn. For this operation, the Anonymous are reportedly using bots called pornbots.
According to reports, the Twitter accounts of ISIS supporters have been bombarded with thousands of graphic sexual images. The images they post are deemed highly offensive to ISIS supporters as they follow a strict version of Islam. The pornbots do not tweet but have explicit images as their DP causing discernment to ISIS followers.
According to a report on Mirror, the pornbot hackers have targeted Twitter accounts which uses known ISIS hashtags. Among the accounts to be targeted were the Amaq, ISIS media agency, who were bombarded by pornbots before their account was disabled.
The pornbots did not spare a Twitter account run by a Frenchman, who has praised the deaths of journalists in Syria and Iraq. Immediately within hours of his ‘praise’ he found himself having around 800 such pornbots as followers.
Anonymous has been forefront in finding and reporting Twitter and Facebook accounts belonging to ISIS supporters. It had announced an operation called #OpISIS after the gruesome killings of Charlie Hebdo employees in Paris and terrorist attacks in Brussels, and declared that it would target ISIS and its supporters online.
In the video released online, a member of the group appeared in Guy Fawkes/V for Vendetta mask and vowed to continue the online campaign against the Syria-based terrorists.
In the video the Anonymous spokesperson states ‘We have silenced thousands of Twitter accounts directly linked to ISIS. We severely punish Daesh on the darknet, hacked their electronic portfolio and stolen money from the terrorists. We have laid siege to your propaganda websites, tested them with our cyber attacks, however we will not rest as long as terrorists continue their actions around the world. We will strike back against them… we will defend the rights of freedom and tolerance.”

Forced Windows 10 upgrade stops hack attack on a TeamViewer victim midway
Let’s be clear about one thing, we all hate Microsoft pushing its latest Windows 10 upgrade down our throat. This has been written and glossed over since Microsoft changed the Windows 10 upgrade from the earlier optional to recommended automatic upgrade in late January. I personally think that Microsoft is conducting a social engineering experiment in which it wants to see how far it can force its loyal users by shoving Windows 10 upgrades.
Windows 10 upgrades have interrupted live weather newscasts and livestreaming of games which have been reported in the media. There may be countless other unreported interruptions Microsoft’s nagware may have caused but this time we have some good news.
A Windows 10 upgrade actually did something good. Yes it is true, Windows 10 forced upgrade has worked in favor of at least one user, who was saved from the recent TeamViewer hack.
The happy user explained his relief on a Reddit thread. He said that his computer was unintentionally saved midattack when a Windows 10 upgrade launched, kicking out the hacker. “I was in the middle of being controlled but, fortunately, a Windows 10 upgrade suddenly started and kicked the hacker off,” he wrote. “Then my version of TeamViewer was removed automatically because it wasn’t compatible.”
The remote desktop connection tool, TeamViewer,as hacked and the yet unidentified hackers started using the hack to drain money from TeamViewer users PayPal and bank accounts. The hacker who targeted zelifcam, was toss out of the system because it was forced to upgrade to Windows 10.
As the upgrade started, the attacker’s connection to the victim’s computer was dropped. Once the upgrade to the new OS was completed, the TeamViewer software was removed entirely as it is reportedly incompatible with Windows 10.
You can read about the TeamViewer hack report here. You can find out if your TeamViewer was hacked here. You can also safeguard your PCs/laptops by looking at TeamViewer alternatives here.

Chances are we will probably see Roll, and Dr. Thomas Light at some point though what other character is a mystery. Whether or not they will move past the Classic Mega Man series and into other series such as Mega Man X is not known. Mega Man, Proto Man, Dr. Wily and Rush are set to release in August of this year.

Check out my own personal results with Plexus:
WEDNESDAY, June 8, 2016 (HealthDay News) — Among people with the common heart rhythm disorder known as atrial fibrillation, women are less likely than men to receive blood-thinning drugs, a new study reveals.
Blood thinners are important for people with atrial fibrillation because they help prevent stroke. Atrial fibrillation causes an irregular heartbeat.
In people with atrial fibrillation, blood doesn’t move from one part of the heart to the other as it should. Instead, the blood can pool and may clot. If a clot travels to the brain, it can cause a stroke. Blood-thinning drugs can help keep clots from forming, according to the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
For the study, researchers reviewed data from nearly 1,600 people with atrial fibrillation. Among these patients, 55 percent of women were taking blood thinners, compared with 61 percent of men.
“The irony is that women have a higher risk of atrial fibrillation-related stroke, controlling for other risk factors such as hypertension [high blood pressure], diabetes, congestive heart failure, yet women are being undertreated,” said study investigator Dr. Mark Eckman. He is a professor of clinical medicine at the University of Cincinnati.
“There are some take-home messages. Doctors need to realize we have mental biases that women are healthier and at lower risk of stroke,” he said in a university news release.
“It’s the same story for coronary artery disease and risk of heart attacks. We think women are at lower risk and we ignore warning signs. Thus, when we are making decisions for blood-thinning therapy for patients with atrial fibrillation, we need to remember that women are at higher risk and we need to make sure we treat them aggressively enough to prevent stroke,” Eckman said.
The study was published recently in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

Bandai Namco has released some new screenshots of their upcoming rogue-like action game, Necropolis coming to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC-via Steam.
The company write this about the game:
NECROPOLIS blends timing-based third-person action with procedurally generated environments, monsters, and treasure. Those elements, married with the game’s striking minimalist art style, sardonic tone, and permadeath gameplay combine for an addictive and original “just one more time” experience.
In NECROPOLIS, players assume the role of a nameless adventurer attempting to escape a living, magical dungeon that reconstructs itself on each playthrough. Craft, equip, explore, and fight to stay alive against all manner of fearsome threats in the twisting labyrinth and endless chasms of this diabolical death dungeon.
Luckily, players don’t need to take on NECROPOLIS alone. Players can bring up to 3 friends along for intense co-op play but be warned: your weapons and magic affect everyone, friend or foe! And although death is still assured, every playthrough will improve your combat skills, magical upgrades, and good old dungeon know-how as they inch closer and closer to the final exit.

One of the main complaints about the original Watch Dogs was the lack of control and the brooding, serious tone set by protagonist Aiden Pierce. With the development of Watch Dogs 2, Ubisoft is moving away from that seriousness and crafting a game that’s far more whimsical, fun, and free-form than the last.
Just a few moments ago, Ubisoft officially pulled the wraps off the game, giving us our first look at African-America hacker protagonist, Marcus Holloway. One of the first things the reveal video highlighted was the new parkour system. Ubiosoft’s motion capture this time allows Marcus to vault over cover and traverse the new setting of San Francisco in ways that Aiden couldn’t. The new motion capture also let the stunt actors play around with Marcus’ weapon of choice: a pool ball attached to a rope. As lame as that may sound (or cool depending on who you are), the video does the weapon far more justice. You can see Marcus effortlessly swing his weapon and incapacitate enemies without missing a beat. Overall, it looks really good.
Speaking of incapacitating, from the looks of it, players might be able to finish the game without killing anyone. Ubisoft mentioned that players can take a non-lethal approach to the game by using Marcus’ taser, but they didn’t exactly specify whether the tazer would be practical for every encounter.
Hacking has also been reworked, with players able to hack just about everything in the game. People, various vehicles, and certain equipment are hackable in Watch Dogs 2. The reveal video showed Marcus using early-game abilities to hack someone’s cell phone, causing them to look at it as a distraction as well as a later ability that increases the range, allowing Marcus to hack a wider area of people. Players can also use Marcus’ hacking abilities to take full control of Watch Dog 2’s various vehicles like cars, fork lifts, and little robots.
Finally, just like with The Division, Ubisoft is taking a seamless-world approach with Watch Dogs 2, although this one looks to be on a far smaller scale. Here, you can run into a friend, say hello to them, and invite them to join you on a romp through the city, causing mayhem or doing whatever you please.
Watch Dogs 2 will be available on the PS4 on November 15, 2016.

Following the catastrophic closing moments of 2011’s Deus Ex: Human Revolution, its follow-up – as its subtitle capably suggests – finds those with mechanical augmentations feared and hated by the rest of society. As our hands-on demo of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided opened, returning protagonist Adam Jensen literally sat at the center of this delicate, potentially volatile rift. As the only augmented member of an elite anti-terrorism unit, he was wedged between his squad mates on a chopper headed for Dubai. Of course, any awkwardness between Jensen and is flesh-and-blood peers was put on the back-burner when he dove from…

Check out my own personal results with Plexus:
If you thought swimming laps was brutal, try doing it with a tail.
Yes, this is actually a thing: Starting Memorial Day weekend, San Diego’s Hotel del Coronado will be offering a weekly high-intensity, full-body workout dubbed Mermaid Fitness, in which participants ditch their leggings and sneaks for a glittery mermaid flipper.
Veronica Rohan, a fitness instructor at the hotel, developed the workout after the tails ($120-$150) started flying out of the property’s gift shop last summer. “It’s circuit training mixed with an ab workout on the side of the pool,” she tells me. “You’ll swim laps to get your heart rate up, and I also included standing stationary movements, like squats and arm exercises with a beach ball.”
The 45-minute, adults-only class takes place in the shallow end of the pool, so it’s totally safe for those who don’t fancy themselves Ariel IRL—and yes, the tails, made from a lightweight bathing suit material, come in dudes’ sizes as well. (Bribe your man by telling him you’ve got a merman fetish—the Instagram pics will be totally worth it.)
“We’ll be offering the class all summer, and we’re really looking forward to guests and locals being able to experience it,” says Rohan, who notes that it will be taking place every Friday morning. Fin-tastic!
Mermaid Fitness class prices range from $10-$20; first class is free with the purchase of a tail. Hotel del Coronado, 1500 Orange Ave., Coronado, CA, 92118, 619-435-6611; hoteldel.com
Want to up your swimming game, with or without a tail? Try these three triathlete-approved drills the next time you’re in the pool. And make sure to apply sunscreen the right way before you take the plunge.
